If you are into history, Charleston is the best place in all of the south! Take a carriage ride around the historic market. Take a walk around The Battery and restored homes and feel like you’ve gone back in time 200 years. Fort Sumter is just a boat ride away in the center of Charleston harbor. Visit a working plantation or just explore the natural beauty of the areas live oaks and low country marshes.

Named one of America’s top 10 beaches by TripAdvisor, Hunting Island State Park is just 15 miles from historic downtown Beaufort. It’s the perfect place to kayak, walk, tour or explore! Further south you’ll find Hilton Head Island and 12 miles of pristine beaches.

  • Just outside the city of Charleston resides one of the country’s oldest living trees – The Angel Oak. Located on the beautiful Johns Island, this live oak is estimated to be around 500 years old and counting.
  • South Carolina also claims to be the birthplace of barbecue, as Native Americans pit-cooked hogs centuries ago off the state’s coast.
  • Stretching 60 miles from Little River to Georgetown, South Carolina’s Grand Strand is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the USA.
  • South Carolina is the 40th largest state in area (32,020 sq. miles) and the 23rd largest in population. South Carolina was the eighth state to officially ratify the U.S. Constitution.
  • South Carolina is the second largest producer of peaches in the United States, just behind California. The state is also a major producer of apples and celebrates the South Carolina Apple Festival each year at the beginning of apple harvest season.
  • The First to Secede. South Carolina played a major role in the Civil War. The city of Charleston is actually where the first shots of the war rang out as Citadel cadets opened fire on a Union ship entering the harbor to bring supplies to soldiers at Fort Sumter. Although much of the conflict itself took place in South Carolina, many people don’t realize that South Carolina was actually the first state to secede before the battles broke out.
  • How did South Carolina get its name? King Charles II granted the charter to start the colony of Carolina. Originally, North and South Carolina were one colony, and he named it in honor of his father, Charles I.
  • Highest point: Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet • Lowest point: Atlantic Ocean at sea level.
  • South Carolina has more than 300 golf courses in total, and Myrtle Beach is known as the golf capital of the world. The first game of golf played in the United States occurred in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • Summerville, South Carolina is known as the birthplace of sweet tea. The town even has a “Sweet Tea Trail” where you can learn all about sweet tea and Southern hospitality.
